Bhimsen Joshi

Bhimsen Joshi
Bhimsen Joshi: Indian classical music met with a great loss today with the demise of Bharat Ratna Awards winner Pandit Bhimsen Gururaj Joshi. We still remember a lot of his songs, but the song that stands out fresh in our memories is “Mile Sur Mera Tumhara” aired by Doordarshan. The song's lead is sung by Pandit Bhimsen and is taken over by other celebrated singers and musicians of India.

Pt. Bhimsen died 8:00 am today at Sahyadri Super Speciality Hospital in Pune. He was admitted to the ICU last week after he complained of suffocation and vomiting. He was suffering from multiple organ failure (urinary infection, respiratory, intestines and kidney problems). Recently, he had undergone a brain tumour surgery (Maningioma) at the same hospital.

Legendary Lata Mangeshkar, paid a tribute to the epitome of Shastriya Sangeet, Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, “Shastriya Sangeet ke mahan gayak Bharat Ratna. Pandit Bhimsen Joshi Ji, aaj humare beech nahi rahe, wo ek mahan gayak to the hi, par usse bhi bade wo insan the, wo mujhe beti mante the, aksar unse milna hota tha, main bahot bhagyawan hu ki maine unke saath ek bhajano ko record bhi kiya tha, unke saath gate hue main bahot darr gayi thi, par unhone
mujhe sambhal liya tha, duniya me aana jana to rehetahi hai, lekin mai unko kabhi bhi bhul nahi sakti, ishwar unki aatma ko shanti de.....”

(One of the greatest singer of Classical music, Bharat Ratna, Pandit Bhimsen Joshi Ji is no more between us today. He was a great singer, but more than that he was the greatest human being. He called me as his daughter. We used to meet each other very often. I am very lucky that I have recorded a bhajan with him. I was very afraid to sing with him, but he consoled and inspired me. World is all about birth and death, but I will never forget him. May his soul rest in peace.)

Shreya Ghoshal one of the celebrated singers in Bollywood, also expressed, “Bharat Ratna Pandit Bhimsen Joshi passes away.. May his soul rest in peace. His voice echoes..”

Actor Anupam Kher mourned to the loss by tweeting,"Bhimsen Joshi mesmerized the world for decades with his Voice. Now it is time for Gods to be mesmerzed. Will miss him. RIP."

Filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar said that it is an irreparable loss, “Loss of Bharat Ratan Sh. Pandit Bhimsen Joshi ji.. So Saddening. An irreparable loss for our nation.. R.I.P.”
